Visitors to Phu Quoc Island may not know that Phu Quoc pearls are said to be the best in the country, but they will certainly notice the abundance of pearl stores dotting the island. Despite the fame of Phu Quoc pearls, most pearls sold do not originate there, and are mostly cheaper fresh-water pearls. Connoisseurs say genuine Phu Quoc pearls are scarce and expensive.

The ancient city of Hue has successfully organised the tourism festival 2008. It has been recognised by the government as the tourism city, the festival city. However, it still has the discouraging appellation of ‘gloomy tourism holy land’.

Every year thousands of locals and tourists gather in a paddy field in An Giang Province to watch oxen race. This year over 30,000 people came out to watch the 17th Seven Mountains Oxen Race on September 27 in Luong Phi Village, Tri Ton District, An Giang Province. The race is a part of traditional celebrations for the Khmer people’s Dolta Festival, the second largest Khmer festival after Chol Chnam Thmay (New Year).

Taking a tour with the local boat people is the best way to enjoy the poetic beauty of the Perfume River in Hue. Rather than take a regular tour along Hue’s Perfume River with travel agents, I decide to do as the locals would do and go by sampan! I arrive at the riverbank before dawn and negotiate a small fee with one of the boat people. As we set off the river is covered with a layer of cold mist.
